'Impressive bronze statue of Bharata raising the padukas (sandals) of Lord Rama' - by K.J.S.Chatrath

Moving through the bronze gallery of the National Museum, new Delhi, last month, I stopped in front of an impressive bronze, Bharata.

Bharata, Vijayanagar, 14th century CE, South India, Bronze.

When Lord Rama refused to return to the kingdom of Ayodhya, Bharata took his padukas (sandals) and placed those on the throne, to rule as regent of the kingdom. In this statue, Bharata is depicted as raising his arms to support the sandals placed on  his head.

Do take a look at this statue when you visit the National Museum, New Delhi.
